Description
Oldbury Wells School (West) is a secondary school, originally a secondary modern school for boys, built in 1958. Designed by Lyons, Israel and Ellis, the building features a reinforced concrete frame with brick infill, solid panels, and glazing, topped with a flat roof. It is two storeys high and consists of a main rectangular block with eleven bays, along with a smaller single-storey kitchen that projects to the east, made of brick.
The main block has a board-marked concrete frame that stands out from the facades. The entrance is located at bays six and seven from the south, which is deeply recessed and includes a staircase projection to the right, also set back behind the columns. The entrance hall is characterized by floor-to-ceiling glazing. To the left of the entrance, a concrete boiler house chimney extends through the roof, serving as an architectural feature, while a water tower also projects above the entrance as another notable feature. The hall to the left is double-height, with walls that are partly solid and partly made up of vertical strip windows. The classrooms are fully glazed, featuring thick timber window mullions and a dado-level band.
