Description
Limbrick Wood School (Infants Block) is a primary school built between 1951 and 1952, designed by the Ministry of Education and Coventry City Architects Department. The construction features an aluminium frame and corrugated aluminium panels, based on the Bristol Aeroplane Company's school building system but adapted to a grid plan. The school has low pitched roofs and an irregular picturesque layout, with a central double-height assembly hall that includes a dining area. Three pairs of lower classrooms extend from this hall in three projecting limbs, while school offices are located in a smaller projecting limb. The classrooms are arranged to create open courtyards around the perimeter. Large strip windows with aluminium frames and painted aluminium panels below enhance the design. This building serves as a prototype school that evolved the BAC's system to provide greater flexibility in its layout.
