Description

No. 1 Shute End is a cottage that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 16th century and has undergone alterations in the early 18th century and mid 20th century. The building features a timber frame that is partly encased in painted brick and painted stucco, topped with an old tile gabled roof. It has a rectangular plan consisting of one framed bay and is two storeys high with an attic. The chimney is located on the ridge at the right side and is part of the chimney stack for No. 43 Broad Street, which is listed separately.

The road front has wooden modillion eaves, and the first floor is finished in painted stucco, featuring two sash windows in architrave frames, although the glazing has been altered. The ground floor has an early 20th-century shop front with a glazed entrance door on the right.

Inside, there are heavy principal beams on both the ground and first floors, which are chamfered with stepped stops. Two similar cross beams on the ground floor are missing, and the joists on the ground floor are also chamfered with stepped stop ends. There is an altered inglenook fireplace, and this cottage, along with No. 3 Shute End, may have originally been part of No. 43 Broad Street.
