Description
Nos. 2 and 4 on Milton Road are two adjoining cottages dating from the mid-16th century. They are timber-framed and encased in brick, with a pebbledashed and painted exterior. The timber frame is exposed on the north gable and at the rear, featuring brick infill, but the structure is underbuilt in brick. The cottages have an old tiled gabled roof and consist of two storeys with a total of five framed bays. There are two adjoining chimneys on the ridge to the left of center and a large 17th-century chimney on the right gable. The cottages have a painted, rendered plinth and boxed eaves. The front facades have three bays each, with 19th-century sash windows. No. 4 features wide bays and a half-glazed entrance door to the right of center, with a small sash window above. No. 2 has smaller bays all to the left of center, with a four-panelled entrance door in the center bay, but no window above it. Inside, many timbers are exposed, and there is a large inglenook fireplace in each cottage. The roof structure includes collar coupled rafters and clasped purlins.
