Description
Shute End House is a town house located in Wokingham, likely dating from the 17th century but rebuilt and refronted in the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. A service wing was added to the west around 1830, which is now subdivided as No. 10A and listed separately. The building is constructed of brick and features a slate hipped roof. It has a central staircase plan with rear extensions and stands three storeys tall with a cellar. The front has five bays, with flanking chimneys. Notable architectural features include a chamfered plinth, moulded brick strings at the first and second floor levels, and flat eaves supported by pairs of brackets. The ground and first floors have segmental headed windows with rubbed brick arches, while the second floor features scrolls on the first, third, and fifth bays. All windows are fitted with glazing bars, architrave frames, and stone cills. The central entrance door is a six-panelled design with a three-pane rectangular fanlight above, surrounded by an architrave and a doorcase with Doric fluted pilasters, a dentilled cornice, and a segmental pediment. There is a small terrace with a stone-capped retaining wall and four concrete steps leading up to the entrance.
Inside, the staircase features stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. Early 19th-century fireplaces have been inserted in the kitchen and study, with flanking glazed tiles displaying a floral motif. Similar fireplaces can be found in the former nursery and front bedroom on the third floor, while the rear bedrooms feature late 19th-century fireplaces adorned with 'art nouveau' tiles.
