Description
Chauntry House Hotel is a large house that dates from the mid-18th century and has been extended in the late 19th century and altered in the late 20th century. It is constructed of brick with a tile hipped roof and a slate gabled roof on the extension. The building has a rectangular, central staircase plan with an extension on the southwest side. It stands three storeys tall, with a one-storey extension, and features two large chimneys topped with clay pots.
The entrance front, facing northwest, is symmetrical and consists of three bays. It has a rendered plinth, string courses at the cill level, a moulded brick dentil cornice, and a plain parapet. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, including two large full-height splayed bay windows, each with three windows on every floor. The central section has one bay, with windows on the first and second floors that are topped with gauged brick arches. The central entrance door is a six-panel, moulded door set in an Ionic doorcase, complete with a pediment, pulvinated frieze, modillion cornice, and engaged columns. This entrance is accessed by six rendered steps that have plain iron balusters and a spiral handrail.
Inside, the hall features a panelled dado, and there is an 18th-century staircase with turned newels and a wreathed handrail.
