Description
The Vale is a large house built in the early 19th century, with extensions added in the late 19th century. The exterior features painted stucco and hipped slate roofs, and the building has an irregular plan. It stands two storeys tall and includes several chimneys topped with corniced heads and Doulton pots. The entrance front, facing southwest, has a three-bay section on the right with a moulded cornice and a balustraded parapet. The first floor showcases two round windows and one oval window, all with moulded architraves and garlands above. There are also two sash windows in moulded architraves. A large doorcase on the right is flanked by Corinthian half-columns and features a dentil cornice. To the left, a later two-bay extension is set back and includes a large oriel window on the first floor, while a further three-bay extension is set back even more.
The road front, facing southeast, has a first-floor band, a moulded cornice, and a balustraded parapet. It consists of four bays with sash windows in moulded architraves. The second window from the right on each floor has a paterae frieze and a moulded cornice supported by scrolled console brackets, with the first-floor window featuring a pediment above.
Inside, the entrance hall contains a wide, open well stair with turned balusters and a closed string, featuring floral carving and moulded tread ends. The sitting room is panelled, with skirting that has egg-and-dart ornament, a dado, and a dentilled eaves cornice. A marble chimneypiece is complemented by a wooden shouldered architrave surround, also enriched with egg-and-dart ornament, along with a wooden frieze featuring floral carving and a moulded wooden cornice.
