Description

Cranbourne Court is a large country house set in landscaped grounds. Originally built in the 18th century, it underwent alterations and extensions in the late 19th century, with a date of 1876 noted on the rainwater head at the front, likely referring to the parallel range added at the rear.

The house is constructed of painted brick in Flemish bond and features a low-pitched slate roof behind a parapet at the front, with a high-pitched slate hipped roof at the rear. It has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high. The exterior showcases several chimneys with stone cornices and Doulton pots featuring cutwork designs. Sash windows are present, with those at the rear including glazing bars. The entrance front, facing northwest, includes a plinth, frieze, moulded cornice, and blocking course at the ground floor, along with a heavy moulded cornice and a plain parapet topped with a moulded coping string at both the ground floor and first floor sill levels. The façade features seven-bay windows set in moulded architraves with bracketed sills, with a slight setback for the three bays on the left and a small two-bay extension on the right. To the left of center, there is a 20th-century prostyle porch supported by fluted and reeded columns without capitals, topped with an entablature that has an egg-and-dart cornice.

Inside, the guests' sitting room boasts a carved wooden chimneypiece adorned with floral decorations and roses in the corner panels of the frieze. The dining room features a carved wooden chimneypiece with engaged fluted columns and a reeded frieze that includes a projecting center panel with floral decorations. The moulded cornice in this room is enriched with ball flower ornamentation. The study contains a marble chimneypiece with engaged Ionic fluted columns, a frieze decorated with paterae and a floral centerpiece, and urns in the corner panels. The moulded cornice here is also enriched with egg-and-dart ornamentation, breaking forward at the ends of the frieze. The games room features a carved wooden chimneypiece with paterae and flutes in the frieze, along with a moulded cornice that includes egg-and-dart enrichment.
