Description

The lych gate, likely a chantry-house with a lych gate underneath, dates from the early 15th century and was altered in the early 20th century. It features a timber frame with parts rendered and brick infill, topped by an old tile gabled roof. The building has a rectangular plan consisting of four framed bays, with an east wing that forms an L-shape and is listed separately. The front and back are jettied, and there is a passage through the structure with the lych gate located on the north side.

The lych gate is two storeys high and has a tall early 20th-century chimney on the west wall with a clay pot. The windows are diamond-leaded casements. On the south front, there is a gabled four-light oriel window on the first floor, featuring a small tiled pent roof and a coved apron, along with a moulded wooden cill and four carved brackets. To the right, there is a two-light side-sliding casement with folding panelled shutters. An archway with a four-centred head and arched spandrels is present, with old brickwork below.

The north front has a gable with a 19th-century carved bargeboard and a three-light sliding casement oriel window on the first floor, also with a small tiled pent roof. The ground floor features a long fixed window with nine turned wooden balusters in front on the cill, set within the depth of the reveal. To the right, there is a four-centred, hollow chamfered wooden arch with moulded spandrels over the lych gate. The passage through has 17th-century brickwork on each side, long tension braces, and an entrance door on the east wall, with stone setts on the floor. The wooden lych gate and fence include a middle rail and flat plain balusters.

Inside, the building displays good quality exposed timber framing, with redundant crown post roof trusses and chamfered arched windbraces.
