Description
27 Market Place is a Grade II listed building that consists of two structures now used as a single property, including the former No 29. The former No 27 dates from the late 18th century and features three storeys with three windows. It has a hipped tile roof and is constructed of red brick with an eaves cornice. The recessed sash windows, which have glazing bars, are topped with gauged segmental brick arches. A modern shopfront and passage entrance are located on the south side leading to the Arcade.
The former No 29, dating from the mid-19th century, is also three storeys and is double-fronted with three windows. It has a hipped slate roof with projecting eaves and is made of red brick, adorned with panelled stucco pilaster strips on the quoins, which have scrolled bases at the first-floor level. The building features an eaves cornice and a stucco string at the second-floor level, along with segmental arched sash windows that have large panes. Its shop front includes panelled pilasters on the quoins and a cornice, with modern shop windows.
At the rear, in The Arcade, there is a mid-19th century shop that is now part of No 27. This section also has three storeys and two windows, with a brick front and segmental arched, recessed windows. The first floor features unusual cast iron glazing bars. The wooden shop front is flanked by pilasters and console brackets, supporting a fascia or entablature with a projecting cornice.
