Description
The Town Hall and Municipal Buildings, built around 1878-81 by James M Money in the Gothic style, is located in the Market Place. The municipal buildings at the rear were added in 1908, replacing the old Mansion House, and are designed in a similar style. The façade facing the Market Place features a central two-storey section with three gabled bays, a three-storey tower at the south end, and a tall four-stage clock tower at the north-west corner above the main entrance. The building has steep tiled roofs, with pyramidal roofs on the towers that include finials and gabled lucarnes on the clock tower. The brickwork is polychrome red and blue, with coped gables and machicolated eaves cornices on the towers. There are string courses at the floor, sill, and impost levels. The first floor council chamber has traceried, two-light, arched windows with gables above. The clock tower features tall lancet windows, a traceried window on the first floor, and a balcony over the entrance. The building also includes arched doorways.
