Description

Kendrick Girls' School, located at No 41 on London Road, is an early to mid-19th century large red brick detached house that has been altered over time. The building stands three stories high with a basement and features a moulded string course at ground floor level and at the first floor cill level, along with deep flat eaves and a slate hipped roof. The upper floors have four ranges of glazing bar sash windows, while the ground floor has three windows and a large central projecting porch. This porch includes steps, an arched entrance, a coffered vault, and double doors with a fan, all of which are from a later period.

To the left, there is a later two-story, one-window extension that has an arched doorway with a stone surround on the ground floor and a modillion cornice above. On the right-hand return, there is a full-height shallow bow with tripartite ground floor windows. A small single-storey lodge with a hipped roof is located to the south-west of the main building.

The property is enclosed by a later brick street wall that features a moulded stone plinth and coping, with tall moulded stone capped piers at intervals. The rear of the building has also been altered, including a two-story projecting wing to the north-west with a rounded corner. The street wall continues to Sidmouth Street, standing about 5-6 feet high, made of red brick and extending approximately two perches long while turning the corner.
