Description
Kendrick View, located at No. 39 on London Road, is a mid to late 18th-century building that stands three storeys high with a basement. It features plum-coloured brick and has a painted brick dentil cornice. The building is topped with an old tile roof that has coped verges and end chimneys. The façade includes six ranges of glazing bar sash windows, with one panel on the second floor and two on the first floor. The entrance boasts a six-panel door with a radiating and wreathed fanlight above, set in an arched recess with panelled reveals. The doorcase is adorned with engaged Doric columns, a broken entablature, and a moulded open pediment, with moulded stone steps leading up to it.
Across the ground floor, there is an early 19th-century six-bay wooden patterned trellis arcaded verandah. To the left, there is a single-storey extension that has been altered; it is constructed of red brick with a grey brick string course and features a deep parapet with two grey brick panels, each containing an elliptical roundel, along with one window and one door. The extension has contemporary rails with a modern gate.
Historically, Kendrick View was home to Mary Russell Milford (1787-1855), a well-known local author, as noted by a wall tablet. It was also inhabited by two local astronomers, the Reverend Richard Sheepshanks and his sister Ann. Inside, the building features a contemporary staircase with a curled rail at the base.
