Description
3 and 5 London Road is a house, likely originally including commercial premises, built in the 16th century or possibly earlier. It has been converted into two dwellings.
The building features exposed timber-framed construction painted black, with rendered infill panels, and is topped with a pitched roof covered in modern plain tiles. The rear extensions are rendered and have felted roofs. The original two-storey structure has a rectangular footprint, but the overall layout is now U-shaped, with the main facade facing south towards London Road and two 20th-century extensions extending northward from either end of the historic section.
The exterior showcases a jettied first floor on the main elevation, which is corbelled out at the western end and supported by later timber brackets elsewhere. On the ground floor, there are two irregularly spaced doorways with later 20th-century doors. The building features horizontal multi-pane shop windows, also from the later 20th century, possibly set in original openings, with a row of studs beneath each window. The jettied first floor is symmetrically framed, with arched braces in the outer bays and alternating wider and narrower posts leading to a narrow central bay. Under the eaves, later 20th-century horizontal windows with sash frames are present—two pairs in the outer bays and two single windows. The partially exposed west elevation has large framing with rendered infill panels. The two extensions on the north elevation each have a single bay of windows facing the garden.
