Description
Micklegate Post Office is a house that likely dates from the 16th century, with a mid-17th century extension and later alterations, including a 20th-century shopfront. The building is timber-framed, featuring a rendered and color-washed front that is underbuilt in red brick laid in stretcher bond, while the rear extension is made of brick. It has a timber bargeboard and a gabled pantile roof with a brick stack.
The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with a jettied first floor and a one-window front that is gabled towards the street. There is a shop door with small-pane glazing to the right of a plate glass window. The windows on the first and second floors are of two lights in 20th-century frames.
Although the interior was not inspected, records indicate that timber studded walls are visible on all floors, along with a late 18th-century Carron duck's nest firegrate and a staircase with splat balusters. The central truss of the rear range is said to have a "curved upper cruck," likely indicating a curved principal truss.
