Description

The Rectory is a mid-18th century building that has been altered. It stands two storeys high with an attic, constructed of red brick on a projecting plinth, featuring a painted brick string at the first floor level and an elaborate painted and moulded wood cornice with a frieze of fluted scroll brackets. The roof is covered with old tiles.

The building includes two early 20th-century gabled dormers with tile-hung gable ends and three-light casement windows. There are five segmental windows on the first floor and four similar windows on the ground floor. The central entrance features a six-panelled door, with the upper four panels glazed, framed by a moulded architrave and a plain arched fanlight beneath an open gabled porch dating from around 1900, which has heavy timbers painted white and a tiled roof.

It is evident that the house originally had a Doric porch, as remains of sawn-off Doric columns are visible under the current porch. The entrance is approached by a flight of stone steps. To the right, there is a two-storey extension from around 1900, which has a small gable, tile-hung exterior, and casement windows with hopper lights on each floor. To the left, there is a one-storey extension of similar design and date.

The listed buildings along Upper Church Lane (northwest side), including the churchyard, Middle Church Lane, Lower Church Lane (west end), Church Passage, and Vicarage Lane, form a cohesive group.
