Description

Iron railings and gates surround the Green in Portsmouth, dating from the early to mid 19th century. These wrought-iron railings face northeast along Pembroke Road, featuring ribbed posts with moulded tops set in stone plinths. The design includes an upper horizontal flat rail and curved stays, with shorter intermediate balusters. The far right section has pointed posts topped with a 'crook', also set in stone bases, and features upper and lower flat rails along with shorter balusters that have pointed tops.

The railings facing northwest along Penny Street match the pattern of the southern sections at the northeast face. From Penny Street, the railings extend across Governor's Green in a southeast direction, aligning with the chancel, and then eastwards to the southeast side and Pembroke Road. These posts have four-sided spikes on rectangular box tops, with curved stays set into the ground and upper horizontal flat rails. Smaller intermediate balusters are also set in the ground. The posts on the southeast side feature a star motif on their rectangular box tops and the City of Portsmouth Crest on the posts adjacent to Pembroke Road. There are two-leaf iron gates on the southeast side and a single iron gate along with another two-leaf iron gate at the far left of the northeast side facing Pembroke Road.
