Description

This pair of former gas lamp standards, erected in 1824 by the Portsea Island Gas Company, are located in front of George Court. Made of cast iron, they feature moulded circular pedestals with square bases and thin tapered shafts. The lanterns on top were replaced in the late 20th century. These standards were installed to replace oil lamps that were first introduced in 1776 and were converted to electricity in 1894. They represent an early example of gas street lighting.
