Description

51 and 52 St Thomas's Street are a pair of houses dating from the 18th century to early 19th century, with No. 52 altered in the late 20th century. No. 51 is built of red brick in Flemish bond, while No. 52 is stuccoed. Both houses have a plain tile hipped roof, with a brick stack on the right side of No. 52 and a rendered, shortened capped stack on the left side of No. 51.

The exterior features three storeys and an attic, with each house having one bay. No. 51 has a door on the left with six moulded and fielded panels, an overlight with lattice glazing bars, and pilasters supporting a bracketed flat hood that extends across a bow window. There are two stone steps with attached guard rails leading to the door. To the right, a tripartite two-storey bow window has a central 12-pane sash and flanking 8-pane sashes, with panelled aprons and reeded pilasters dividing the lights on the first floor. Each floor has a frieze and modillion cornice, with the friezes decorated with vase and swag mouldings.

No. 52 features a 16-pane 20th-century sash on the ground floor, and the first floor has a similar bow window to No. 51, but with a plain frieze. Both houses have a 12-pane sash on the second floor, with No. 51's sash set under a rendered flat arch. No. 51 has a dentilled brick eaves band, while No. 52 has a plain band and a coped parapet. No. 52 includes a hipped dormer, while No. 51 has a 20th-century dormer.

On the right return, No. 52 has a six-panelled door at the centre set under a rounded arch. Flanking sashes have 16 panes on the ground floor, 12 panes on the first floor, and 9 panes on the second floor, with a 4-pane sash above the door on the second floor. There is also an access door to the yard on the right, set in the boundary wall. The windows and doors of No. 52 have been replaced in the 20th century. The interior was not inspected.
