Description

Two houses at 44 and 45 St Thomas's Street, Portsmouth, were built in the late 18th or early 19th century and restored in the late 20th century. They are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a plain tiled roof. Number 44 has two bays, while number 45 has three.

Number 44 has five stone steps leading to a three-panelled front door on the left, set in a recessed surround with panelled reveals and a soffit. This surround is flanked by engaged fluted columns supporting a frieze and cornice. To the right of the door is a 12-pane sash window set under a flat, gauged brick arch. The first floor has two 16-pane sashes, also under gauged brick arches. The second floor has two sashes, one with nine panes and the other with an unequal number of panes, both under gauged brick arches.

Number 45 has five stone steps leading to a six-panelled front door with a fanlight, set in a recessed surround with panelled reveals and engaged fluted columns supporting a pediment. Two 12-pane sash windows are on the right under flat, gauged brick arches. The first floor has three 12-pane sashes under gauged brick arches, and the second floor has sashes similar to number 44, with the unequal-pane sashes under gauged brick arches. A brick dentil band runs above all the windows, topped by a coped parapet. Number 44 has one 20th-century roof light, and number 45 has two. The rear of the building has been significantly altered in the 20th century. The interior remains uninspected.
