Description

These are a pair of late 17th and early 18th century houses, with a later 18th century refronting. They are located in St Thomas’s Street, Portsmouth. Number 69, Becket House, has a plain tile roof and a brick stack to the right of the right-hand side. Number 70, Peppercorn House, has a concealed roof and a brick stack to the right.

The houses are three storeys high. Number 69 has two bays, while Number 70 has one. Number 69 features a six-panel door to the left, set within a panelled surround that includes pilasters and a moulded hood supported by shaped brackets. To the left of the door is a small round-headed stained glass window. Above the door are two four-pane sash windows. Smaller four-pane sashes are located on the first and second floors. A tripartite canted oriel window is positioned to the right on the first floor, with a central four-pane sash, narrower flanking sashes, a moulded sill, plain apron, fascia and cornice. Horizontal bands run across the first and second floors, topped by a coped parapet.

Number 70 has a six-panel door to the left, with pilasters and a pedimented hood on shaped brackets. Four stone steps lead to the entrance, and to the right of the door are two sash windows, each with twelve panes. Horizontal bands also run across the first and second floors of Number 70. The first floor has a tripartite window; the second floor has a two-light casement window. A lead capping tops the parapet. The interior of the buildings has not been inspected.
