Description

No. 76 High Street is a mid-18th century, three-storey house with a plaster front. It features an early tiled roof, brick chimney stacks, and a cornice with modillions at the eaves. The first and second floors have two widely spaced windows. The ground floor includes three doorways that are flanked by incised pilasters and brackets, which support a fascia and a projecting cornice. There are two late bay shop windows and rectangular lights above the doors. The central door is accompanied by sidelights.

Three reeded pilasters extend from the first floor to the eaves, with one at each end and one in the center, each topped with an entablature that has a circular ornament on the frieze. The first-floor windows are shallow three-light bays with reeded mullions, a frieze, and a cornice, while the second-floor windows have narrow reeded cases and plain cills. All windows are sash with glazing bars.

At the rear, there are two-storey extensions with an old tiled roof that create a pleasant courtyard, which connects to the rear extension of No. 78. This building is part of a group that includes Nos. 62 to 86 (even), as well as Nos. 66A, 70A, and 86A, Nos. 88 to 106 (even), and the former St Anthony Franciscan preparatory school.
