Description
No 78 on High Street is a mid-18th century building that stands three stories tall, with a roofline slightly higher than the adjacent No 76. It is constructed of red brick with some grey headers and features a steep early tiled roof that is slated at the base. The building has a brick chimney and a modillion eaves cornice. The shop front is double, with a central entrance flanked by pilasters and fluted fascia brackets. There is one glazing bar sash window on both the first and second floors. At the rear, there is a three-light, two-storey bow window. Additionally, there are two-storey extensions that form a courtyard with No 76, connected to No 78 by a single-storey range with two three-light bays. This building is part of a group that includes Nos 62 to 86 (even), along with Nos 66A, 70A, and 86A, Nos 88 to 106 (even), and the former St Anthony Franciscan preparatory school.
