Description
Dene Cottage is a mid to late 18th century building located on the south-east side of Horsefair Green in Stony Stratford. It is partly timber framed and has undergone significant alterations in the 19th century, with modernizations since then. Originally, it was constructed from red brick featuring a light diaper pattern of blue headers, which is now painted over. The building has a gabled extension at the rear of No 35A and a mid-19th century cross wing attached to No 35.
The cottage stands two storeys high, with four windows on the first floor (modern casements) and three on the ground floor, plus one window per floor on the cross wing, which has three-light casements. A wooden dentil cornice adorns the structure, and the roof is tiled, featuring kneelers on the south-west side and one of the gabled extensions at the rear. The doorcase of No 35A includes a pointed open canopy with mutules inside, a reeded Regency frame, and a four-panel door. The rear has a catslide roof, while the cross wing of No 35 has two entrances on the side and is half hipped at the rear.
Inside No 35A, there are remnants of some studding and several stop-chamfered beams. Dene Cottage is part of a group that includes Nos 34, 35, 38, and the street wall and gates to No 38.
