Description

No. 156 Eastgate is a former town house that has been converted into offices. It features an 18th-century re-fronting and internal remodeling of a 17th-century building. The front is made of brick with a Kent tile mansard roof, while the rear is timber-framed, partly weatherboarded, and clad in brick and render. The building has a double-depth plan with an entrance hall and stair on the left, although the stairs were originally located in a rear turret. It stands three storeys tall with an attic.

The front facade has a regular four-window arrangement, with two flat-roofed dormers—one containing a sash window and the other a two-light casement window. The parapet has been rebuilt with stone coping, and there is a moulded brick cornice. All floors feature 12-pane hornless sashes set in reveals under flat window arches, with stone sills, including two on the ground floor where the reveals extend below sill level. The left-hand entrance has a wooden doorcase with panelled reveals, a panelled door, and a fanlight, while a simpler doorway is located to the right.

Inside, there are significant remains of 18th-century wall panelling and internal shutters. A well-designed lateral open oval staircase rises through all floors, featuring a wreathed rail and stick balusters. Some late 17th-century panelling can also be found in the former framed stair turret.
