Description
Nos 150, 152, and 154 High Street is a Grade I listed building that was originally a large town house and is now divided into three shops with flats above. It dates from the mid-17th century and was restored in 1864. The building features half-timbering with brick cladding and has extensions at the rear, topped with Kent tile gable-end roofs. It stands three storeys tall with an attic, displaying an almost symmetrical three-bay façade, each bay gabled. The second and attic storeys are jettied, while the first floor was originally jettied before shop fronts were added.
Each upright is intricately carved with geometric designs, and there are plain rails on each floor. The gable walls have one two-light Yorkshire sash window with glazing bars, and the bargeboarding and apex finials are dated 1864. Both the first and second floors feature oriel windows, with one in each bay set off-centre. The side bays have canted oriels with a 1:5:1 ratio, while the middle bay has a 1:8:1 ratio, all with transoms and mullions, including a king mullion in the centre oriel. Between the two right-hand bays, aligned with an enriched brick ridge stack, there is a five-light window on each floor, also with transoms and mullions. Most windows have glazing bars, with a few casements present.
The shop fronts, dating from the 20th century, have wooden surrounds and plate glass windows. The shop front for No 150 on the right features glazing bars and a panelled plinth. The right-hand return has a jettied attic and a five-light casement window on the gable wall, with continuous canted oriels on the first and second floors, maintaining the 1:5:1 ratio with transoms and mullions. The building has brick underpinning and various elements at the rear under catslides, including two separately hipped wings, one of which has a massive ridge stack, along with lower gabled extensions. The interior has not been inspected.
