Description

No 170 is a former house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the mid-17th century, with a front added in the late 18th century. The building features a partly timber-framed rear, a front made of Flemish bond red brick, and a roof covered with Kent tiles. The first floor plan is clear, consisting of three units in the front block; the two eastern bays have a dividing stack, while the western bay contains the stairs. The building stands three storeys tall, with a regular three-window range on the front. The shopfront, designed in an Edwardian style, was added in 1982. The first and second floors have four-pane horned sash windows set in revealed frames beneath cambered arches. The stone-coped parapet has been renewed. The left side wall is stuccoed and has two windows, while the rear gable is made of brick and features two first-floor windows with 12 and 16 panes. An outshut extends to the west.

Inside, there is a mid-17th century dogleg staircase that runs through all three storeys. This staircase is notable for its ambitious proportions, featuring urn and shaft balusters on stout rectangular plinths, with abutted newels at each angle that alternate between rectangular and rounded shapes. The first-floor front chamber includes ovolo-moulded and stopped chamfered spine and cross beams, an early 18th-century box wooden cornice, and part dado panelling. The rear chamber has a stopped and chamfered cross beam, while the second-floor rear room has a partly exposed bressumer for a 4-centred chamfered fireplace, which may have been reused. Some timber framing, including angle wall posts and wall plates, is also exposed.
