Description

Circa 1820s, "Kelston" or "Nelson Mansions" is a large detached house situated on Nelson Place, though its front faces Castle Street. The house has three storeys and is faced with cement rendering, featuring coupled pilasters with incised Greek key panels. The inner pilasters project slightly, supporting a cornice above the first floor, with further pilasters above this and a cornice and parapet at the top. A tetrastyle Greek Doric portico, raised on three steps and with an iron balustrade above an entablature, sits on the front. It provides access to the recessed sash windows, which lack glazing bars and have block sills. The first-floor cornice extends along the Nelson Place entrance front, where a central Greek Doric porch is located. "Kelston" or "Nelson Mansions" forms a group with numbers 22 to 24 Castle Street.
