Description

Palmer House is a house dating from 1577, situated on the south side of Castle Street. It is similar in style to the adjacent No. 22, but includes flanking pilasters decorated with incised panels in a Greek key pattern, set on a plinth. The sash windows have been fitted with later glazing bars, although one window retains its original two-light casement. A balcony extends across the entire first floor, including a bay window. The entrance wing features a square-headed doorway flanked by incised panelled pilasters, with a frieze and cornice above. A flight of steps leads to the doorway, but there is no parapet. Palmer House, together with Nos. 22 and 24 and Nelson Mansions on the corner of Nelson Place, forms a notable group.
