Description
22 Castle Street is a villa built around 1840. It has three storeys and a semi-basement, with a stucco exterior. There is a moulded string course at the second floor level and a low-pitched hipped slate roof with wide eaves. The second floor features three windows, while the other floors have five windows, including three in a stuccoed canted bay that was added to the east, complete with a cornice and blocking course. The windows are recessed, sash style, with most of the glazing bars intact, and have architrave surrounds and block sills. An ornate bracketed cast iron Victorian balcony is located on the first floor of the bay. There is a two-storey entrance bay with one window set back to the west. The recessed door has four moulded panels and a round-headed entrance, flanked only on the west side by a pilaster, with an architrave above. A flight of eight steps leads up to the entrance, with a stucco parapet on the west side and a capped pier. Nos 22 to 24, along with Nelson Mansions at the corner of Nelson Place, form a group.
