Description
Nelson House is an early 19th-century house in a row, set back from the road. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with concrete tile roofs. The house comprises a lofty three-storey block with a parallel range also in three storeys, featuring an internal valley gutter. The entrance is to the right, with a staircase positioned opposite at the rear.
The front elevation has three windows, all with sixteen-pane sashes in plain reveals, set on sills, and with plain flush lintels, offset slightly to the right. A panelled door is situated to the right, sheltered by a shaped lead hood with a fretted frieze. A platband, neatly incised with "NELSON HOUSE" in a sans-serif font, runs along the first floor, above which is a moulded cornice, blocking course, and parapet. The gables are coped, with ashlar stacks to the left; the rear stack is particularly deep and features cornice capping. Gable returns are plain. The rear wall is of rubble construction, with twelve-pane sashes to the upper floors and sixteen-pane sashes below, and a twelve-pane sash to the staircase, on the left side. The interior has not been inspected. Nelson House represents a formal design positioned within a more vernacular row of buildings.
