Description
16 and 17 High Street are a pair of houses located in Twerton, dating from the early 18th century, with some early 19th century changes and 20th century alterations. They are constructed from coursed rubble and feature a double Roman tile roof.
The buildings rise three storeys, each with one window. No. 16 has two-light stone mullioned casements with recessed ovolo mould surrounds and a straight drip at the first floor, while the ground floor has a late 19th century plain sash window and a flush panelled door in a chamfered stone surround to the right. No. 17 features sashes, with a twelve-pane window at the first and second floors, and a sixteen-pane window at the ground floor, all in flush surrounds. To the left, there is a 20th century door in a chamfered surround, topped with a flat stone hood on shaped brackets. Above the ground floor, there are some remnants of a stone drip course. The left gable is coped and has a two-stage ashlar stack, along with a large square central ridge stack raised in ashlar.
At the rear, there is a full-width tiled lean-to at ground floor level, which includes a small vertical light in a stone surround and a crude drip at the first floor. The eaves feature a three-light late 20th century replacement window for No. 16, and a blocked single light and two-light 19th century small-pane casement for No. 17. The interiors have not been inspected. This pair of houses is one of the earlier surviving examples on High Street, retaining significant original detailing.
