Description

The former chapel of Camp Hill Prison was built around 1912 in the Early English style. It is constructed from concrete blocks, reportedly made by prisoners from the nearby Parkhurst Prison, and features asbestos tiled roofs topped with a wooden cupola. The windows are fitted with cast iron grilles.

The building has a five-bay nave and a single-bay chancel, with a north porch and a south vestry. The north front is gabled, featuring a cross at the apex and kneelers. It includes a triple lancet window with ornamental cast iron grilles above a projecting porch that has an arched entrance, side-lights, buttresses, and a ledged plank door. There is also a plinth and corner buttresses.

The east and west sides each have five bays with paired lancet windows, separated by buttresses, while the chancel features a paired lancet window. The vestry on the north side has paired lancets and a tall chimney. The south side includes a pair of lancets and an arched entrance.

Inside, the nave boasts a five-bay, arch-braced, boarded roof supported by stone corbels. An octagonal stone font with quatrefoil moulding sits on a central column with two steps. The large chancel arch is adorned with paired colonnettes on stone corbels, and the chancel features rib vaulting along with a large carved wooden reredos that has two tiers of arches and a central gable. The west wall includes a piscina and an arched entrance leading into the vestry.
