Description
Part of Parkhurst Prison consists of a terrace of houses built between 1843 and 1844 by Sir Joshua Jebb. The buildings feature red brick walls with painted stucco dressings, a slate roof, and red brick chimney stacks. This terrace is half of a once symmetrical design centered around a round-headed stuccoed and coved arch, with the right-hand rusticated abutment still intact. The terrace is two storeys high, with No. 2 set back to the right. It has a round-headed sash window on the ground floor and a blank oculus on the first floor, flanked by pilasters that support a 20th-century plain parapet in place of the original entablature. Access to No. 2 is via the return elevation, which leads to a terrace of four houses (Nos. 3-6). These houses feature a continuous arcade of round arches at ground floor level, with plain imposts containing, from left to right, a window, two doors, three windows, two doors, and a window. The windows are small-pane sashes with recessed brick panels underneath, while the doors are part-glazed and date from the 20th century. Above the arcade, there are five small-pane sash windows with segmental heads, alternating with the arches and connected by a plain cill band. The eaves project, and the roof is hipped to the right, with three cross-ridge stacks.
