Description
St Mary's Hospital, originally known as The Isle of Wight Hospital, was built following an Act of Parliament in 1770, making it one of the few hospitals constructed before the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. The original building is shaped like a large L, representing two sides of a square that was never completed to form a courtyard.
The hospital has two storeys, with the north side featuring 19 windows and the east side having 18 windows. It was originally designed with dormers. The structure is made of red brick with a tiled roof, and the glazing bars are intact. The central section of the north side, spanning five window bays, is constructed with grey headers and has red brick window dressings, quoins, and a cornice. There is a pediment that contains a lunette window, and a round-headed rusticated doorway is located on the ground floor. The hospital has undergone extensive modern additions, including a lift shaft.
