Description
The Hop Store, part of the premises occupied by Mew and Langton Company Brewers, is located on Crocker Street and dates from around 1900. This very tall building features grand proportions, standing three storeys high in yellow brick with a high red brick basement that has banded rustication on the Holyrood Street side. The south front is enhanced by giant pilasters with red brick Doric capitals and red brick arches between the floors, leading up to the third floor, which has round-headed windows with red brick arches above. The second floor is blind, while segment-headed windows appear in alternate bays on the basement and first floor. The building has a red brick moulded eaves cornice and red brick pediments at each end of the roof. A copper-sheathed hoist on cast iron brackets runs along the ridge of the roof, extending the full height of the upper three storeys on the Holyrood Street side.
