Description
St Magnus Court, located at 20, 22, and 24 Guild Street in Aberdeen, was built in 1870. This three-storey and attic building features five bays and showcases Scots Baronial architectural detailing. It is accompanied by a later, similar adjoining domestic and commercial building to the north. The structure has twelve bays facing east on Stirling Street and west on Exchange Street, and six bays to the north on Imperial Place. The ground floor includes public houses on the east and west sides, characterized by timber stall risers and fascia.
The building is constructed from tooled granite with contrasting band courses and flush banding, while the ground floor is finished in ashlar. The openings are shallow segmental arches, with some alterations made to the ground floor. The roof features piended dormers with narrow timber moulding and crow-stepped gables on the west and east sides.
The principal elevation faces south on Guild Street and is symmetrical in design. It has a central advanced section topped with a corbelled, stepped parapet that includes a datestone and a panel with the initials 'CR', along with corner corbelled turrets. The outer bays house commercial premises on the ground floor, and the turrets are adorned with candle-snuffer roofs and weather vanes.
The upper floors predominantly feature four-pane timber sash and case windows, while the ground floor has altered windows and plate glass windows for the public house. The roof is covered with grey slate in a mansard style, complete with coped gables, ridge, and wallhead stacks. Some non-traditional glazing is present on the east and west sides, and the turrets are finished with fish scale slates.
