Description

The former warehouse at 49 Carmelite Street, designed by Ellis & Wilson in 1883, is a three-storey building with a basement, featuring a Classical style. It is located on a corner site and has a distinctive, decorative three-light curved corner bay. Currently, it serves as an office, with disused flats above as of 2006. The exterior is constructed from tooled grey granite, with some ashlar dressings and a rock-faced basement. The building includes band courses, cill courses, a cornice, and a coped parapet. There is an advanced, flat-roofed entrance porch to the south, featuring an off-centre four-panel timber door with a swan-necked pedimented doorpiece.

The southwest corner bay is flanked by decorative carved pilasters at each storey, with paired consoles on the first and top storeys. The building displays carved classical motifs, including roundels and swags below the eaves cornice, and a central tall decorative curvilinear wallhead panel with decorative urns above. Incised pilasters divide the window bays.

The windows are predominantly plate glass timber sash and case, with some vertically-aligned six panes. Some windows are boarded up. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are gable stacks. The interior was partly seen in 2006, with the ground floor having been comprehensively modernised.
