Description

This building is a tall classical warehouse located at 44-72 James Watt Street in Glasgow, constructed around 1863. It has three storeys, a basement, and an attic, featuring a total of 13 bays. The ashlar frontage includes a channelled ground floor, with the three outer bays slightly advanced. A broad band course above the ground floor serves as a base for Roman Doric pilasters that support an entablature featuring a deep frieze, into which attic windows are inserted.

The central entrance is arched and has a consoled keystone, with a two-leaf panelled door that includes a wicket. The plain basement openings are set in the plinth, with one shute in each outer block. All ground floor windows are segmentally headed and feature voussoirs. The first and second floor windows are linked by tall architraved and lugged frames with ramped heads, and there is a string course and aprons between the first and second floors. The building has a bold entablature with simplified triglyphs and a recessed parapet.

Inside, the basement features cast-iron columns that support brick vaulting, while above, cast-iron columns support double coupled timber beams and timber floors.
