Metropolitan Vickers Offices, 74 Waterloo Street, Glasgow

The Metropolitan Vickers Offices, located at 74 Waterloo Street in Glasgow, is a five-storey commercial building designed by James Thomson in 1925. It features a modern classical style with Greek detailing and is situated on a corner, comprising five unequal bays across three sections.

The exterior is constructed of polished ashlar, with channeling at the first floor and angle strips. The ground floor has been altered, but it includes a tall corniced doorpiece at No 74 Waterloo Street, which is adorned with acroteria and a metal door featuring a paterae border. The ground floor cornice is decorated with a Vitruvian scroll. The first floor is low and has unfinished sculpture blocks facing Waterloo Street.

Above, the first floor cornice acts as a stylobate for giant pilasters that clasp at the corners, extending from the second to the fourth floor. These pilasters have stylised sculpted capitals, and the plain two-light sash and case windows are fitted with glazing bars. The building is topped with a bold cornice that includes coupled mutules and sculpted escutcheons.

Inside, there is a marble-lined vestibule.
