Description

The Egyptian Halls, located at 84-100 Union Street in Glasgow, is a notable commercial building designed by Alexander Thomson between 1871 and 1873. This four-storey structure features a symmetrical design with classical influences, incorporating Greek and Egyptian detailing. The ground floor has modern shops, but there are traces of the original fascia and shop surrounds. The building consists of 18 regular bays and is constructed from polished ashlar with a cast-iron frame.

It has sash and case windows, and the first floor is distinguished by superimposed antae with richly sculpted brackets supporting an anta pilastrade, along with a sculpted, incised cornice. The second floor features a coupled, slim anta pilastrade, a rosette frieze, and a cornice with ante fixae. The third floor showcases an eaves gallery supported by squat Assyrian columns, recessed T-pane glazing, a rich frieze, a modillion cornice, and a parapet adorned with ante fixae.
