Description

St Cross Mill is an early 19th-century water mill located on St Cross Lane. It is constructed of red brick with blue headers in English bond and features a Welsh slate roof. One gable has been rebuilt in stretcher bond. The building stands three storeys tall, with the ground floor featuring two cambered headed windows and a doorway with plain timber jambs and lintels. The first and second floors each have three light, 12-pane casements with timber mullions. The returns include two windows and a cast iron small paned window in the rebuilt gable. To the left, there is a single-storey wing that has been altered but appears to be part of an earlier mill. A later extension at the rear is of no special interest.

Inside, the mill has timber construction with three chamfered cross beams at each level. It originally housed an iron breast shot wheel, although all paddles are now gone. There is a great spun wheel and an iron vertical drive with a wallower and double crown wheel, both featuring wooden teeth, but all milling machinery has been removed. The top floor contains corn bins and a principal raftered roof with staggered purlins, with the main members being chamfered.

Historical records indicate a significant change of ownership in 1810, which may mark the date of the main building's construction, and in 1876-78 when it was sold by Winchester College, possibly dating the remaining machinery. The mill retains an almost complete original structure from the early 19th century, with some late 19th-century machinery. The basement has several courses of stone that may date back to the monastic mill.
