Description
These buildings, dating from 1843-44, are part of Parkhurst Prison and were constructed as part of Sir Joshua Jebb's work on the site. Originally, they were connected by a large red brick gateway featuring a round-headed stuccoed arch with coved and blind flanking bays, but this has since been demolished. The western wing initially served as the Deputy Governor's house, while the eastern wing housed the prison Chaplain. The buildings are two storeys, constructed of red brick with hipped slate roofs and projecting eaves. The east wing has five windows, and the west wing has four, all set within round-headed stucco arches. There are four recessed doors to the east wing, and one to the west, each featuring four fielded panels.
One house, now offices, extends in an L-shape and was extended to the rear in the late 19th century. The external walls are red brick, with painted stucco dressings and a slate roof, complemented by red brick stacks. The left-hand bay features two sash windows on the ground floor and one on the first floor. The recessed right-hand bay contains a tripartite sash window on both floors, with the lower section cutting through a plain string course. A continuous cill band runs along the first-floor windows. The building originally joined a mirror image of numbers 2-6 Nicholson Street and is accessed via a later 19th-century porch on the return elevation.
