Description

The Chapel at Whitchurch Hospital is a large lancet-style chapel built in red brick with Bath stone dressings and Welsh slate roofs. It features an aisled nave with a chancel. The south elevation, facing the hospital, has two pairs of gabled clerestorey dormers, each containing a three-light Gothic window. The roof slopes down over the aisle, which is hipped to the left. The chapel has six bays, marked by thin stepped buttresses, with two lancets in each bay except for the right bay, which has a single window and a shallow porch with a Gothic doorway. The south elevation of the chancel includes a small transept with two lancets, shallow buttresses, and a Gothic doorway, along with a diagonal buttress at the south-west angle and two lancets to the east. The east end has three lancets, while the west end features a broad single-storey porch with a hipped roof and a central gabled bay set forward with a Gothic doorway. On either side of the porch, there are two two-light windows separated by buttresses, and a simple Gothic doorway on the returns. Above the porch, there is a large three-light window in the gable and a bell-cote at the apex.

The north elevation mirrors the south, but at the north-east angle between the transept and chancel, there is a narrow castellated chimney-tower with a two-light louvred window on each side, along with a vestry that has a window with three camber-headed lights.

Inside, the chapel is primarily red brick with Bath stone dressings and is currently used as a store room, with most furnishings removed. It features an open arch-braced roof and a nave arcade of six bays supported by round stone piers. The aisle windows have stained glass with simple art-nouveau designs at the heads, though much of it is broken, particularly on the north side. There are steps leading up to the chancel, where the organ is located to the left, and the lancets contain glass depicting figures of Faith, Hope, and Charity. The west porch is subdivided with separate doors leading to the aisles and the nave, and the pulpit remains in its original position.
