Description

The former Anglican Chapel at St Woolos Cemetery is a Gothic-style building that contrasts with the nearby Romanesque Nonconformist chapel. It is constructed from roughly squared red sandstone, featuring Bathstone details, and has clay-tile roofs. The chapel has a cruciform plan with a lower chancel, and the eastern end of the nave is highlighted by a tall two-stage bellcote, which includes a trefoiled opening adorned with ballflower detail and a large foliage crucifix.

The nave consists of two bays, each with early Decorated style two-light windows on the north and south sides, although these windows are currently covered with protective sheeting. The western bay of the nave features a large porte cochere, and the western arch includes ballflower detail within a deep hollow, with shafts capped by foliage. The hoodmould has headstops and ends in an empty pinnacled niche with a steep crocketted gable. The side arches are four-centred and consist of two orders, terminating at the impost level.

The western door to the nave is set within a Gothic opening and has a four-centred head, although the tympanum detail is concealed by protective sheeting. The paired boarded doors are fitted with elaborate branched iron hinges and have decorative iron margins. The short transepts have three-light windows on the north and south sides, featuring cusped lights and a central roundel with foils. Above the gables are tiny open cruciform vents, and the transepts also include lancets on the eastern and western elevations, with the northeastern lancet blocked by a lean-to chamber north of the chancel, which has a truncated chimney rising against the corner of the transept.

Currently, the chapel is used for storage and was not available for inspection at the time of the survey in April 1999.
