Description

Gaer County Primary School is a mid-20th century educational building arranged as two parallel classroom ranges terraced across a sloping site, connected by a taller north-south cross range containing the assembly hall and dining room towards the western end. The eastern ends of the ranges terminate in cloakroom and lavatory blocks.

The building is constructed with steel frames and precast concrete roofs made in situ, with walls faced in hand-made brown brick. Flat roofs feature deep anti-glare overhangs. Steel windows have been partially replaced with plastic units on the western side of the assembly hall.

The southern entrance front is the principal façade. A broad flight of steps leads to an entry well positioned to the left of centre, aligned with the taller cross range. Triple doors are set within a concrete storm-canopy with tapering sides. To the left, slightly set back, stands a lower administration block with a continuous row of ten 6-pane steel windows. The western end of the administration block has a central door within a storm-canopy, flanked by 6-pane windows. To the right of the main entry extends a long classroom range with a row of thirteen 18-pane windows rising to eaves height. This range terminates in a lower square cloakroom block, slightly set back, with a south front featuring central paired doors and three oculi on each side; the east face has a central door and two oculi on each side. On the west face of the range near the entry is a foundation stone, and nearby on the south face is a circular Festival of Britain award plaque.

The rear elevation of the classroom range features a full-length flat-roofed corridor with a narrow row of windows above providing top-lighting for the classrooms. The corridor range has continuous fenestration and a central door.

The cross-range rises taller than the flanking ranges. A low rectangular southwest clock tower surmounts the lobby, bearing a simple clock-face to the south with the hands removed. Three oculi are arranged vertically on the west face, with a projecting flue to the left. Tall windows in five bays light the assembly hall to the west, now replaced in plastic. The east elevation has 24-pane tall steel windows in six bays, rising above a flat-roofed corridor range with continuous glazing. At the north end of the assembly hall is a large roof-light with tapered sides and pyramidal roof.

The northwest classroom range has a south elevation with 18-pane windows in eight bays rising to eaves height. The north elevation features a long row of windows serving the corridor, flanked by doorways; the left doorway is set within a concrete canopy. Continuous top-lighting for classrooms is provided above.

The terraced northeast classroom range has elevations similar to the south classroom range, with the east cloakroom block retaining its original flat-roofed top-lighting.

A dining hall and canteen wing projects northward in line with the assembly hall. The west and east elevations feature six bays of tall 10-pane windows. The wing narrows towards its centre, forming a T-plan, with a lower two-bay service block to the north.

Two small terraced playgrounds occupy the eastern side of the site. The lower playground contains a small flat-roofed building to the northeast, originally used by the gardener.

The interior is entered through a top-lit lobby, which now differs from the original arrangement of small glass oculi. Steps lead directly from the lobby into the assembly hall, split into three flights by metal balustrades with simple geometric patterning. The hall has a stage at its north end, lit naturally by a safety lantern designed to allow smoke escape in case of fire. Axial corridors branch from the lobby, serving the administration range to the west and classrooms to the east. The cloakroom at the end of the south classroom range was originally top-lit with small glass oculi panels, now roofed over; lavatories and a drying room are adjacent. Corridors run along the north sides of the ranges. A north-south link-corridor with two short flights of steps runs along the east side of the assembly hall. The rear range contains classrooms with an axial corridor. The dining room projects north in line with the assembly hall, with kitchens beyond.
