Description
Rothbury House is a house dating from the 18th century, constructed of squared and roughly dressed stone with dressed stone string courses, surrounds to windows and doors. It has a slate roof with deep overhanging eaves. The windows are stone mullion and transom style, with single panes below and four-light windows above. The symmetrical three-bay facade is of two and a half storeys. A central first-floor oriel features three narrow single windows, a solid parapet, and the inscription 'ROTHBURY HOUSE' carved at its base. Below the oriel is an advanced doorcase, and above it a gabled dormer with an ogee pediment. Canted full-height bays extend to either side, with paired windows to the front and single windows to the sides, culminating in a balustraded pediment to the attic with Dutch-gabled dormers featuring paired windows. A moulded, interrupted string course runs along each bay at first floor, topped by a parapet.
The right-hand elevation is of three bays, with an advanced ground-floor bay to the left, accessed by steps rising to the first-floor entrance. A dressed stone doorway is situated on the left-hand return. The first-floor entrance is set in a projecting stone surround with windows to either side and returns. A gabled dormer and balustraded pediment top this section. Two further window bays extend to the right, with a narrow window bay at the extreme right. The left-hand elevation displays a five-window range offset to the left, with a full-height pilaster to the right, which likely marks a former chimney stack. Windows on the ground floor are grouped in pairs to the left, with the right-hand window blocked. A doorway to the right presumably provided access to a now-lost extension.
The rear elevation features a projecting chimney stack offset to the left, and centrally a large first-floor 12-over-3 light stone mullioned window with coloured glass, depicting a moustachioed knight in stained glass within the central lower light. A blocked window is located to the right. A later extension is attached to the ground floor, linking with a later single-storey brick building to the rear. A further detached brick building stands to the side.
The interior retains the original symmetrical plan layout, with an original staircase centrally positioned and aligned with the main front entrance. A further hallway with an archway connects the stair to the right-hand entrance bay. Many internal fittings and features remain, including the staircase, panelled doors and architraves, overlights, and dado panelling.
