Description
Stow Hill Railway Tunnel is the easterly of the two tunnels located under Stow Hill. It extends from a point approximately 450 meters southwest of Newport Station, just north of Windsor Terrace, for about 650 meters, emerging roughly 150 meters northwest of Llandaff Street. The northern and southern portals feature round-headed arches made of heavily rock-faced voussoirs, reflecting the influence of 16th-century Italian architecture. The tunnel is constructed with coursed rock-faced masonry.
Inside, the tunnel is faced in stone, with repairs made using sprayed concrete in 1987.
