Description
The Dorset Hotel, located at No. 31 Dover Street, is a large villa built around 1830 to 1840. It stands on a corner site with Melville Street and features two storeys and a basement, with a cement-rendered exterior. The low-pitched hipped slate roof has projecting bracketed eaves. There are two stuccoed chimney stacks on the eaves at the north and south ends, each linked by a stucco parapet that has an arched opening at the base.
The front facade includes three recessed windows with intact sash glazing bars and block sills. The central entrance is a recessed door with three panels and a rectangular fanlight featuring marginal glazing bars. This door is framed by a moulded surround. A Greek Doric porch, set on a plinth, is positioned at the top of a flight of five steps, with pilasters on the wall, a frieze that has a modern fascia board, a cornice, and a blocking course above. There is also a modern single-storey wing on the north side of the building.
