Description

Montague House, dating to circa 1840, is a two-storey and basement building faced in stone rubble, appearing as brickwork. It features a stucco frieze and pilaster strips on a plinth. The low-pitched slate roof has projecting eaves. The main facade has three windows centrally, with one in a slightly projecting bay featuring rusticated yellow brick quoins. The windows are recessed; the centre first-floor window is shuttered and likely blind, while the others are sash windows with intact glazing bars. They have rusticated yellow brick surrounds, block sills, and gauged flat brick arches to the ground floor. The central recessed door has six fielded panels and a rectangular fanlight, with splayed stucco reveals and a plain stucco surround. A Doric pilastered porch, featuring quarter pilasters to the wall, frieze, cornice, and blocking course, encloses the entrance. A two-storey wing extends to the South, with a hipped slate roof. This wing has two windows; the one next to the main block is narrow, and the ground-floor window is recessed with sash windows and intact glazing bars, set within rusticated yellow brick surrounds. The segmental arches are present on the narrow windows. The first-floor window of the main section is a three-light bay window with intact glazing bars, plain strips, a frieze, and a cornice with a stepped apron. The east garden front is constructed of painted brick and features three windows, two in a bow to the North. These windows are recessed sash windows, some retaining glazing bars, with block sills. The wing on this front has superimposed three-light bay windows, a frieze, a cornice, and an apron.
